On the morning of October 22, 2018, 20-year Wagner-Smith Equipment Co. employee Steven Campos received a call no parent ever wants to get. His son, 16-year-old Gabe was being rushed to the hospital.Gabe had been living with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) his entire life, insulin dependent and doing his best with managing the disease as an active teenager. One of Gabe’s favorite things to do was play a round of golf and learn from his dad, Steven.

April 2019 marked the first "Golfing for Gabe" charity tournament, and the tradition continues.  The 2020 Tournament will be held October 3 at Southern Oaks Golf Course in Burleson, Texas, with a goal to raise $15,000 for Camp Sweeney.  Camp Sweeney is located just north of the DFW area in Whitesboro, TX.  Each year, they provide 3 weeks of fun, fellowship, medical education and lifestyle enhancement to kids ages 5-18 living with T1D in the form of a summer camp. The length and intensity of these sessions are the reasons campers obtain successful diabetes management. A diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes changes the life of a child forever. Days filled with school, sports, and activities are quickly replaced by blood tests, insulin injections, and carbohydrate calculations. Every step required to manage their diabetes is a step away from what children see as “normal.” But at Camp Sweeney, Type 1 diabetes is normal. And when diabetes disappears, every camper can show what makes them special, not what makes them different.
